LION - G.L. Smuts

G.L. (Butch) Smuts was a researcher in Kruger National Park from 1970 to 1978 and published this book based on his research.

During the time of his research, no one really knew how many lions there were in Kruger National Park. In order to find out, Butch Smuts and his colleagues had to develop a reliable technique for counting lions, which led to them working by night, calling lions by means of tape-recorded sounds, capturing, marking and releasing them.

In less than five years over 1 200 lions were captured. This lion-captured techniqued prioved to be so successful that it was later used in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park.

Although a scientific publication, the book was written in a relaxed format, sharing many tales about lion counting project.
